Correcting a Deviated Nose and Treating Rhinitis with Autologous Rib Cartilage Reconstruction

Hello, this is Dr. Cha-Young Kang, Director of Nose Lab Clinic.


Today, I’ll share a case of correcting a deviated nose resulting from previous hump nose surgery using autologous rib cartilage reconstruction. This case also involved addressing functional issues, such as rhinitis, while achieving aesthetic improvements.

1. Surgical History


  • 2020: Septal correction + hump removal + osteotomy

  • 2023: Aloderm and ear cartilage used to elevate nasal tip

2. Initial Findings


  • Significant nasal deviation

  • Wide nasal bridge

  • Deviated nasal septum

3. Patient Goals


  • Correct nasal deviation

  • Use autologous rib cartilage for reconstruction

  • Incorporate silicone implant

  • Raise nasal tip

4. Surgical Plan and Procedure


a. Functional Improvements

  • Corrected deviated nasal septum.

  • Performed turbinate reduction using radiofrequency laser.

  • Reconstructed septum using autologous rib cartilage.


b. Structural Enhancements

  • Removed previously inserted donor rib cartilage.

  • Elevated nasal bridge using autologous rib cartilage.

  • Corrected nasal deviation.


c. Aesthetic Refinements

  • Elevated and repositioned nasal tip.

  • Slimmed the appearance of the wide nasal bridge.

  • Adjusted the overall balance and proportions for a harmonious look.

This case presented significant challenges due to severe damage to the nasal septum from previous surgeries. Using autologous rib cartilage, we successfully reconstructed the septum to restore structural stability while achieving aesthetic refinement. Addressing rhinitis during the surgery further improved the patient’s overall quality of life.
